This was the first B-47 Stratojet (53-1881) to land at Chelveston (1st May 1956). Basically designed to deliver “instant sunshine”.
According to the parish history – 1st December 1952 - Station transferred to United States Air Force (USAF), and a completely new, longer runway (11,000 ft) was added for the 3914th Air Base Group. The base was used the US Strategic Air Command (SAC), with B-47 Stratojets of the Reflex Alert Force.

It shows the cold war SAC runways, taxiways and dispersals being built over the top of the WW2 airfield, sometime around 1954-5.
